Rockford is a Suffolk-based components manufacturer bringing a wealth of employment to a remote rural area. Having become part of the Government run Sharing in Growth programme to promote and grow the UK manufacturing Industry, Rockford carried out a repositioning of their sector specialisms.  This required design and printing services to clearly communicate with these new sectors as they prepared for the International Trade Shows.

Having worked on their initial website the new Marketing Director asked us to pitch for the upcoming work. We suggested a structured timeline to roll out the changes in time for each milestone taking them through our methods of working and related portfolio examples.


An umbrella ‘look & feel’ was required to work across the 3 sectors of Commercial aerospace, Military Defence and Marine Industries. This included creating designing 3 concepts across a few of the marketing items required to show how the brands could sit together but stand out, and still feel part of the Rockford family and a photography guide for the tone of imagery used.

Our design services covered:

  • Once a route was chosen we created the concept Brochures for each of the 3 sectors
  • We suggested the print specification to get the best finish within the clients budget
  • Creating folder cutter guides to allow for inserts and a spot silver finish
  • The 3 sets of brochures were printed in 2 different languages
  • Component Inserts to slot into each brochure were designed
  • A PowerPoint template was created for continuity across presentations

Throughout the process we met face to face with mock ups of the deliverables as the client’s preferred method of communication and managed the printing process through to delivery.

Next was the exhibition boards for the Paris, UAE & Farnborough Air shows:

  • Understanding the message that needed to be portrayed and the dimensions and restrictions of the booth, we created large format image panels for greatest impact in a busy hall, keeping small text to a minimum.
  • Instead of showing pictures of parts, we suggested setting each component in an easy to handle resin boxes, allowing people to get a good view while standing at the counter, facilitating discussion.
  • From here we extended the panels to an 8 panel stand for the larger shows, incorporating interactive screens


With the brand guidelines now firmly in place Rockford are able to clearly promote their different sector experience.

Next we were invited to carry out  a Requirements Workshop to scope the goals and objectives of Rockford against the requirements of their customers to enable us to write a technical specification needed to bring their website in line with this new positioning.

In 2011 we redesigned Rockford's website, with an easy to use content management system to keep the site up to date. The site has since been developed further, with a French version launched and an online Parts database added.
