If it looks like spam, walks like spam and squawks like spam, then it probably IS spam! That's the rather simplistic view taken by some less sophisticated anti-spam services.

If there are any senders who you wish to always receive e-mail from even if the mail would normally be classified as spam you can add addresses and domains to a whitelist.

2. Bayesian analysis: MailDefender then checks the e-mail against two levels of training sets. The first level contains a training list of generic known spam e-mail and one containing known good e-mail. MailDefender analyses the content in context and measures the probability of the content belonging to one set or another. The second level works in the same way but uses training sets which are especially designed to identify spam of a sexual nature. Based on this analysis MailDefender scores the e-mail, if the e-mail score hits a defined threshold then it will be quarantined.

3. Internet content filters: MailDefender is able to analyse the web links within an e-mail against a categorised URL database. Using this method MailDefender can identify spam e-mail which sources its content from inappropriate locations on the Internet and will quarantine mails which fall into this category.

4. Language filters: MailDefender is able to recognise different language character sets. As a result you can allow only certain character sets through the filter, turning off access to e-mail containing Korean characters for example.

MailDefender will send a summary e-mail on a daily basis to selected users allowing them to ensure that if anything is wrongly classified they can still receive it.
